Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal sanitation officer urges public information on galamsey operations

The Water and Sanitation Officer for the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly Michael Kojo Johnson has called on residents of mining communities to volunteer information on activities of illegal miners popularly referred to as galamsey in Ghana, to help reverse the destruction of water bodies and critical vegetation around these river bodies.

He said if residents are able to provide information on these activities to the authorities, appropriate action would be taken to prevent the pollution of water bodies and the depletion of forest reserves.

Speaking on the watershed community Radio Programme on Pure fm, in Tarkwa on Tuesday, (July,2020), Johnson lamented that several attempts by successive  governments to stop galamsey operations and the depletion of forest reserves had  not yielded any meaningful results.

Johnson made the call at a Watershed Radio Programme on Pure FM in Tarkwa in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem municipality of the western region.

The Sanitation Officer also called for a concerted effort to sustain the campaign against illegal mining activities to help improve the quality of water bodies in the country.

He entreated the security agencies especially, to intensify the anti-illegal mining operations to reverse the destruction of water bodies and the destruction of forests.

Johnson stressed that apart from galamsey activities, industrial waste, household waste disposal and farming, are also major factors of water pollution in the country.

He appealed to individuals, traditional authorities to support the security agencies in their operations to help protect the water bodies.
